Lemon, ginger and cinnamon... Oh My!

So, you are searching for a way to easily and affordably boost your antioxidant intake and improve your immune system. This is the answer. It is a combination that I will recommend in my new Antioxidant Immunity Boosting 3 Day Cleanse. The funny part is, it's so simple, you probably already know it. But let's talk about "why" this works.
For starters, what am I talking about? It is the simple combination of lemon, ginger and water. Plus the addition of 3 of my favourite antioxidant boosters, honey or maple syrup, turmeric and cinnamon. This combination is an antioxidant kick in the pants. But, why are antioxidants important? In the world around us, the water we drink, the air we breathe and the food we eat, exists something called free radicals. Free radicals come in many forms including pesticides and herbicides on food, pollution in the air and fertilizer that has made its way into fresh water. These free radicals cause damage to our cells and can potentially lead to serious health concerns such as cancer, asthma and diabetes. Antioxidants are capable of repairing cell damage and promoting healthy cell turnover. As we talked about, cell damage happens from free radicals but it also happens naturally with age.
So what does all of this have to do with strengthening our immune systems? When your antioxidant levels are low and our free radical levels are increased, we have a higher amount of damaged cells in our systems. Our body then spends time and energy, attempting to repair these cells. If our antioxidant intake is high, we have healthier cells and our bodies can instead use this time to fight illness and disease that attempts to invade our bodies. This is also true when we are talking about things like sufficient vitamin and mineral intake.
So what's the deal with these specific ingredients?
Lemon: an excellent source of flavonoids, which are a form of antioxidants, as well as containing 51% of your recommended daily intake (RDI) of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is very important for the absorption of iron, specifically non-heme (plant based) iron. Fellow vegans rejoice.
Ginger: contains gingerol, closely related to capsaicin in peppers, which is a powerful antioxidant as well as an anti-inflammatory.
Cinnamon: high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and improves insulin sensitivity!
Turmeric: contains curcumin....a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Not to mention its ability to boost brain function.
Maple Syrup / Honey: Both are high in antioxidants but my choice will always be maple syrup. 1. Because it's vegan and 2. because it also contains a large variety of vitamins and minerals!
How to prepare this drink.... juice or slice half a lemon, grate a thumb size piece of ginger and add both to a boiling cup of water. Next, add 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 to 1/2 tsp turmeric and 1 tsp honey or maple syrup to the cup and allow to sit for 3 to 5 minutes. Enjoy this drink every morning or evening for maximum benefits and feel free to adjust the measurements to your liking.
